The Power of Synergy

Show up authentically and synergy will meet you there.

― Sanjo Jendayi

Synergy. Relatively little is known about it, yet it’s all around us. Nature provides some of the best examples of synergy. Whether it’s in the field of chemistry or even within the biomes contained in our own bodies. Often people use the illustration of oxygen vs water to describe synergy.

I want to take that illustration and add one more molecule of oxygen. That gives us Hydrogen Peroxide. H202. You now have this completely transformative and healing compound. That is the power of synergy.

Synergy can also be seen in nature. In an episode of Planet Earth, David Attenborough describes a stunning victory of Starlings over the Peregrine Falcon. “The starlings eluded the world’s fastest predator because they moved as one organism.” The peregrine falcon is capable of diving at over 200 mph. Yet, it was “out maneuvered by the organized synchrony of the collective team.”

Again synergy shows up in sports like Rugby. Rugby is the origin of the the methods used in Agile Scrum project management. It leverages the synergy of the team in short bursts, or sprints in order to move the project (like the ball) forward.

We must think of ourselves as a tribe — as an international community that has come together with a common purpose of being initiated into the process. We all have to do it together. There is a link that happens — where THE growth, my growth, depends on the others’ growth around us. We can no longer take these steps by ourselves. We have created a synergistic community. We must take a step towards knowledge together.

Alberto Villoldo

Synergy is a vital component that every team needs no matter it’s size. In order to ensure conditions for synergy to thrive, you have to be willing to grow and learn together. This is why authenticity is required. I openly admit to my team that I do not know everything.

The beauty of a team is this: each member brings certain strengths to the table. When we leverage those strengths, develop those strengths, it has a way of exponentially making the whole team stronger. Collective growth through authenticity helps to create an environment where synergy loves to come out and play.
